Drake Beavers

The Drake Beaver Section has been busy beavering away this year, doing all sorts of fun activities!

Over the summer a new account was opened to allow the section to start online payments for subs and camps, and should be up and running by October. This will allow easier administration giving back valuable time that has been spent taking in payments and organising at the beginning of each weekly meeting. Hopefully everyone will take up online payments as many parents regularly ask if they can pay online.

We now use emails to notify any up and coming events making it easier for parents to let us know who can make it.

The section has grown to nearly 30 beavers on the books over the past 6 months with the help of some very enthusiastic parents spreading the word, as their beavers have enjoyed the varied scouting programme for weekly meetings, camps and day events supplied.

So far this year been on :-

  • A Circus themed camp during the Easter break. They all really enjoyed practising their circus skills.
  • A few came along to group camp and got involved in many activities with their parents, for the Saturday afternoon.
  • They joined Monday cubs at Summer Camp and loved staying in tents. The cubs seemed to naturally take responsibility of the beavers when they were in groups for activities. Both beavers and cubs enjoyed swimming, cooking, an amazing camp fire and other onsite activities.
  • End of summer trip to the beach making sandcastles for crabs, paddling and sack races.
  • A further end of summer trip to Adventure Island.
  •  Badge work covered growing their own plants, making bird feeders and hover crafts plus a visit to Wat Tyler RSPB and the best visit from RC Exotics learning about and handling reptiles and various insects and furries!

                              Dates Planned so far

  • 10th/11th November Christmas Camp at Skreens, Chelmsford
  • !4th/15th July Summer Camp at Kingston Ridge, Laindon

A big thank you to all the leaders and young leaders of Drakes Beavers, and to the parents for their support, allowing us to give the children what we hope is a fun and varied scouting programme, and look forward to telling you all about the fun and adventures had, in the coming year at our next AGM.

Any parents wanting to experience the fun we have and lend a hand please come and see me.

Thanks Hazel

Annual Report for Beavers  –  Nelson Colony

We have had another successful year for the Nelson Beavers of 4th Canvey Island Scout Group. Currently there are 21 beavers made up of a mixture of girls and boys.

Beavers have attended two sleepovers one at Thriftwood Scout site in Brentwood staying at Oak Lodge. Fun was had by all and a good experience for each Beaver. The other sleepover was also at Belchamps Scout site staying in Kath Batts where again fun was had by all. Some of the younger beavers attended during the day to experience a beaver sleepover.

Nelson Beavers have worked on several activity badges which include disability where it was experienced how lucky we are not to be disabled. Several beavers have achieved their challenge badges which include skills, teamwork, global, outdoors and adventure.

One beaver from the Nelson Colony has achieved the highest award for a beaver to gain which is the Bronze award before leaving beavers for cubs.

Beavers attended the Gilwell Funday at Gilwell Scout Campsite this year where fun and adventure was had by all including visiting a Muslim Synogogue which was very informative. The soap sud run down a hill proved a big hit with some beavers who loved getting all soapy. Also bouncy castles of every description.

Over the past year we have had a very young colony so experiences have been challenging for a good percentage of the beavers. We have tried to do team building and activities that keep each beaver interested and wanting to attend each week.

Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to Belinda Johnson who assists me each week. Beavers cannot operate without help and other parents helping as well. If you are interested in joining our team please do not hesitate to speak with me at any time as help is always wanted each week.
